What‘s Going on in Washington?

5.12.20

Welcome back! In today‘s blog, I will be telling you what you need to know about what’s going on in Washington this very week.

Unfortunately, the White House has been hit by the Coronavirus. Last Friday, one of Mike Pence‘s staffers tested positive for the virus, the same day it was announced that 11 Secret Service employees tested positive as well. In response, the White House decided to require masks in the Oval Office. Health experts such as Dr. Fauci and Dr. Redfield are self quarantining after they came in close contact with carriers of the virus.

For the first time in its history, the Supreme Court is holding arguments online via teleconference. The Court is opening up the case to the public, where anyone is able to listen. The current case involves President Trump. The debate is whether or not Trump is required to release his personal financial records as sitting president.

Dr. Fauci testified today in front of the Senate from his home. He reiterated the importance of social distancing, opening up slowly, and cautiously working toward opening up the economy. Fauci argued that “if some areas—-cities, states, or what have you— jump over those various checkpoints and prematurely open up, without having the capability of being able to respond effectively and efficiently, my concern is we will start to see little spikes that might turn into outbreaks.“ His argument comes at a time when many states are debating if they are going to reopen their respective economies.

If you have any questions or decide to tune into the Supreme Court, feel free to email me (jacob@thatpoliticalkid.com) ! I‘d be curious to hear from some of you!

Thanks so much!
